<p>A version control system is responsible for recording all the changes made in time in the database called a <strong>repository</strong>. </p>

<p>Developers can check out their project history and view who has made changes and what those changes are. If something goes wrong, reverting to an earlier state can be executed. A version control system helps developers recall specific versions of their projects.</p>

<p><em><strong>Do we really need a version control system?</strong></em> Well, let’s take a look at the alternative approach:</p>

<p>Developers would still need to store copies of the project in many different folders. This indicates two things: unscalability and time-consuming.</p>

<p>What if multiple people were working on the same project? This scenario is not unlikely, especially when dealing with complex programs. Well, this would mean that the latest code would need to be transferred constantly, and changes would need merging–manually.</p>
